GIR Q1 2020
Investigations into VimpelCom, Las Vegas Sands, MTS, Alstom, Airbus and GSK; highprofile prosecutions in India, the UK, Brazil and elsewhere; regulator-mandated monitorships; helping build a state-of-the-art compliance analytics platform ‒ these are only a few examples of the myriad of fascinating matters that the featured investigations practitioners talk to GIR about in the 2020 edition of GIR’s ‘40 under 40’.
Selecting the final 40 was by no means easy ‒ we were inundated with strong applications on behalf of specialists from all over the world. The GIR team considered their experience and references from colleagues and clients to whittle the long list down to the final 40.
We present a diverse group: the individuals practise across 13 jurisdictions and work for 40 different employers, including law firms, consultancies and major companies. There are 21 men and 19 women in our final 40. In the special feature, the nominees discuss their biggest cases and the individuals who have inspired them. Their current colleagues relay their favourite anecdotes, while former colleagues and clients provide further insight into the nominees’ specific qualities.
Elsewhere in this magazine we present a long read detailing Pascale Dubois’s recent departure from the World Bank, where she had led the department investigating fraud and corruption in bank-sponsored contracts, after some two years into the role and over 20 years with the bank in total. Furthermore, this issue includes interviews with a French prosecutor who worked on the Airbus resolution, and with Jill Mason, the chief compliance officer at medical device company Orthofix, who discusses the company’s compliance evolution in the wake of nowresolved SEC and DOJ investigations.
